Exciting times at Turner Designs! New products and now a new home. The last 6 months have been full of activity – we introduced a handheld field fluorometer called AquaFlash which allows users to quickly assess photosynthetic efficiency as well as estimate total chlorophyll, a FluoroSense with Phycocyanin optics to aid in the identification of Harmful Algal Blooms, and most recently the C6P for long term deployments with up to 6 sensors. We attended multiple shows where we had the opportunity to meet with many of you and talk about everything you're doing. In the midst of all that, we moved to a gorgeous new facility. I love these newsletters as they're a great time to stop and reflect on everything we’ve done in the past 6 months.  Ok, I’m done reflecting – it’s time to get working on the next 6 months! AquaFlash Handheld Active Fluorometer for Quick Assessment of Photosynthetic Efficiency
Turner Designs’ new AquaFlash provides an incredibly easy and fast method for obtaining accurate estimations of both Total Chlorophyll (µg/L) and Photosynthetic Efficiency (Yield) or “Health” of algae. These parameters are often used to track or predict the onset of blooms, look at phytoplankton stressors such as toxins or grazing pressure, and determine algal effects resulting from water mixing, sedimentation, etc.

FluoroSense Handheld Fluorometer for Phycocyanin Estimates
Turner Designs now offers phycocyanin (PC) as an optical configuration for the FluoroSense Handheld Fluorometer to assist with identification of PC-containing algae typically associated with Harmful Algal Blooms (HABs). Obtaining both PC and chlorophyll estimates helps in determining whether additional testing is required to check toxicity levels in a body of water. >>Read More

New C6P enables up to 6 Integrated Sensors
Turner Designs new C6P package enables up to six sensors in a corrosion resistant, highly durable, Delrin plastic housing able to withstand the harshest of environments and rated to a depth of 600 meters. Cyclops-7 Logger has an Android App
The Cyclops-7 Logger offered by PME (www.pme.com) can now be controlled using an Android phone. This app allows control of any of PME's USB loggers and has data offload capabilities. Additionally, the app enables customers to check important logger vitals and quickly change the sample rate.  >>Read More

Copper Plate available for extended deployments of C3 & C6P Submersible Sensors
Biofouling is one of the greatest challenges for long term deployments. There are many different preventative measures to help control biofouling but none are a complete solution to the problem. Turner Designs initially offered wipers when we introduced the C3 and added replaceable copper tape a few years later. Through experience, we learned the concentration of copper in the tape simply wasn’t enough to completely prevent growth in active environments.   >>Read More

AML‘s Cabled UV performs on Turner Designs sensors
Turner Designs recently concluded in-depth testing of AML’s Cabled UV. Upon Cabled UV’s 2014 release, we recognized the advantages the product would bring to the use of our fluorometers. Testing with Cyclops-7 sensors showed the Cabled UV did not interfere with the fluorescence measurements. Sensors tested included Crude Oil, Refined Fuels, Chlorophyll-a, Rhodamine, Fluorescein, and Turbidity For more information on Cabled UV, please contact AML.

New Trilogy Ammonium Module

Ballast Water Management in the field Put to the Test

Last summer, Turner Designs participated in a 10 day research cruise aboard the RV Meteor, a research vessel owned by the Federal Republic of Germany. The cruise included 19 researchers from 10 countries performing 28 experiments using several sampling devices and multiple analytic devices. The collected samples were fractionated according to size class of organisms and fractionates were individually analyzed using fluorometric, microscopic, ATP, FDA, and molecular labeling techniques. There were 3 sampling events per day, 2 splits per sampling event, and 3 fractionates per split over 11 days for a total of just under 200 samples collected during the cruise. Determining the Efficacy of a Submersible In Situ Fluorometric Device for Cyanobacteria Monitoring Coalesced with Total Suspended Solids Characteristic of Lowland Reservoirs

The purpose of this study was to ascertain the effect of turbid water on a fluorometric device designed to detect phycocyanin and chlorophyll a in cyanobacteria cells in vivo. Cell densities corresponding to the Blue Green Algae Alert levels endorsed by the Australian National Health and Medical Research Council and adopted by numerous water resource managers were coalesced with a range of total suspended solids at defined gradients characteristic of lowland freshwater ecosystems. The parameters of interest were phycocyanin and chlorophyll a. Microcystis aeruginosa was the experimental organism used to establish cell densities consistent with the three-stage alert level framework. Phycocyanin was found to be an effective measure for detecting M. aeruginosa at concentrations prescribed within the cyanobacterial alert levels (Green, Amber and Red) in turbid waters up to 200 Nephelometric Turbidity Units. >>Read case study

Measuring pCO2 with a C-sense at the San Francisco Exploratorium

Turner Designs deployed a C-sense pCO2 sensor alongside the PMEL Carbon mooring at the Exploratorium Museum in San Francisco. Intentions were to see how well the C-sense tracked pCO2 changes in San Francisco Bay . This unique opportunity was granted by Mary Miller, a science writer and the director for the Exploratorium’s partnership with the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration. C-sense data were continuously logged using a Turner Designs DataBank Logger. The picture to the left shows the PMEL Carbon Buoy alongside the Exploratorium Museum located on the Embarcadero’s Pier 15 in San Francisco. This mooring is a first for the PMEL Carbon program in terms of the proximity to shore. >>Read full case study

Download utilities SW for AquaFlash & Ballast-Check 2

The Download Utilities Software is a simple program written specifically for AquaFlash and Ballast-Check 2 to help users easily download data from their instrument. This software is an alternative to using terminal programs such as Hyperterminal to download data. The Download Utilities Software installs quickly and is designed to work with all Microsoft computers. Simply install the software, set the appropriate COM port, designate where to save data, and send stored data from the AquaFlash or Ballast-Check 2 to the designated file. Data may be appended to existing files; all files are saved as *.csv which can be opened with either Microsoft Excel or viewed as text using Notepad. This software can only be used with an AquaFlash or Ballast-Check 2 and will not receive data from any other instrumentation. >>Download Software

We Moved!

We are so excited to be in our new home. Although the move didn’t go quite as quickly as hoped, we’re here and we love it. Production is building and shipping, engineering and applications are designing and testing, and sales is quoting and booking. We haven’t quite finished the interior decorating, but it feels like home. We are conveniently located near San Jose airport – please come see our new facilities if you’re in the area.
