Why Are PFAS Called "Forever Chemicals?

You may have heard PFAS referred to as "Forever Chemicals." But what does that actually mean?
Many PFAS compounds contain extremely strong carbon-fluorine bonds, among the strongest chemical bonds found in organic chemistry. That strength makes many of these compounds highly resistant to heat, sunlight, and natural environmental processes that would normally break down other chemicals.
As a result, many PFAS can remain in the environment for extended periods, which is why they've earned the nickname "Forever Chemicals."
It's important to remember that PFAS isn't a single chemical. It's a large family of thousands of different compounds. Scientists continue to study how individual PFAS behave, how long they persist, and what that means for environmental monitoring and public health.
